Clearing brain fog - Blog 1 in a series of 3

Feeling foggy?

Everyone experiences brain fog – or mental confusion - from time to time, but people with Hashimoto’s tend to suffer with this more than most.

We’ve all walked into a room and forgotten why we went in there, but chronic brain fog, experienced much more often, or over a long period of time, can have a serious impact on our lives.

It can stop us from doing our jobs effectively, and cause tension in personal relationships. It also causes unnecessary stress because we don’t feel fully in control, which can be upsetting and sometimes even frightening, rather than just fleetingly frustrating. Our distress is compounded by those around us who can’t understand why we’re behaving this way, and unfairly label us as disorganised, disinterested or unreliable.

A patient of mine with Hashimoto’s who says brain fog and exhaustion are the two symptoms she struggles with most, describes her mental confusion as: “feeling blocked, like being too tired to think.” Another patient described it as “like my brain is working in slow motion; like the words will come eventually, but I have to search for them, like they’re in the distance somewhere and I can’t quite grab them.”

The most commonly experienced symptom is short-term memory loss, where we might use the wrong words, or forget names of people and things.

So what causes brain fog?

There are lots of of causes of brain fog (see ‘Brain Fog Blogs 2 & 3’) but two of the biggest causes, often experienced by people with Hashimoto’s, are lack of sleep and stress.

Lack of sleep
People with thyroid issues often have sleep issues, yet sleep is critical for healing your thyroid.

Actually, whenever I’m treating a patient and they tell me their sleep has improved, I know I’m on the right track with the remedy I’ve prescribed. Good sleep is a vital foundation for good health, and without it our brains can’t operate optimally.

Stress
Stress is a big trigger for Hashi’s and is often identified as a root cause of the disease. Under stressful situations the thyroid hormone T4 gets converted to Reverse T3 instead of the active form of the hormone, T3. Reverse T3 is an inactive molecule without any physiological activity. So it just takes up space without bringing anything to the party!

Constant worry and stress causes mental fatigue and when our brain is exhausted it becomes harder to think clearly, reason and focus.

How does homeopathy clear the fog?

We have a number of homeopathic remedies for brain fog. Below are three of our top remedies. You might want to try one that fits your symptoms best, daily, in 30c potency for a couple of weeks. However, a homeopath will be able to match your symptoms more closely to a remedy, having a deeper knowledge of all the potential remedies that might fit your symptoms.

It’s important to remember that although homeopathy can target remedies directly at specific symptoms, for a truly transformative experience you should work with a professional homeopath who can prescribe remedies over time that address your symptom picture as a whole. These more deep-acting prescriptions will stimulate the body to rebalance your immune, endocrine and digestive systems, clearing more than one of your symptoms, by reversing Hashi’s.

Nux vomica
Best for: toxic brain fog caused by alcohol, or drugs - recreational or prescribed. Brain fog caused by long-term mental over-exertion maybe from a demanding job, or from burning the candle at both ends.

Cadmium Sulph
Best for: brain fog caused by radiation, from many x-rays (including dental x-rays), or in frequent flyers who have been through countless security scans. Also used for brain fog after chemotherapy “chemo brain”.

Cannabis indica
Best for: being very forgetful; forgetting your last words or ideas. If you start a sentence and then forget what you intended to say. If you’re unable to recall thoughts or events because of other thoughts crowding your brain. Time seems to drag – a few seconds seems ages.
